My Artist Statement

I am a multimedia multi-content artist that likes to use unnatural color palettes. Much of my art is made from a direct physical reference or photo, but I have grown my skills in creating from my imagination as well.  I often alter colors, usually by heavily saturating, or using high value and low saturation. I do still use natural and local color matching for more realistic rendering as well as monochromatic palettes.

I currently shift between clay, oil & acrylic paint, oil & soft pastels, colored pencils, fabric paint, graphite, charcoal, digital design & illustration, ink pens & markers, bottled ink with calligraphy pens, watercolor pencils & paint, acrylic & chalk markers, and craft supplies like pipe cleaners. It is uncommon for me to utilize the same media on multiple consecutive sessions, outside of class assignments. In fact, I will often change media while working on the same artwork. I want to become proficient in each of these media and continue to expand to more media.

My content ranges from high realism to cartoon, from deeply meaningful to just for fun. I will create from any reference, often challenging myself when I can. I reference people, animals, scenery, plants, nature, art supplies, room layouts, and handheld items. My artwork can seem bright and upbeat because of the colors, however the meaning behind my artworks is often deeper.

My most recent works have had a darker tone to them as I have been overcoming a difficult life situation. I am heavily impacted by international affairs and I have begun to make political pieces to stir thought and to bring attention to important subjects. Creating has helped me put my feelings onto paper, purposefully being cryptic in my messages. This has caused my art to become more abstract, because though I want to express how I feel, I do not always want others to be able to interpret it. The true meaning behind much of my art is for me alone.
